Globalization from Below: Labor Inequality in the German Shipbuilding Industry, 1960-2000

This study examines how globalization affected employment changes in the German shipbuilding industry second half of 20th century. Over four decades, as a response to global competition originally large and labor-intensive shipyards northwest Germany evolved into lean nimble high-technology companies. Our findings based on 28 oral history interviews with former staff two leading show that this large-scale transformation is hitherto hidden labor mobility, migration evolving dimensions diversity workplace. Allowing for look at from below, narrations reveal structural subjective implications workforce hierarchies different workers’ roles positions. We identify five patterns social exclusion inequality between within groups workers without migrant backgrounds have not been documented before.
